JWT vs Session Auth: Which to Use?

Stateless JWTs scale beautifully — until you need to revoke a token. Here's a clear-headed comparison of JWT and session-based auth for modern apps.

The short version Sessions are simpler, easier to revoke, and harder to misuse. JWTs scale across services without a shared session store. Most production systems end up using **both**.

When JWT wins - Stateless microservices behind an API gateway - Mobile clients where cookies are awkward - Federated identity (OIDC, SAML, third-party SSO)

When sessions win - Server-rendered apps with a single backend - You need instant logout / revocation - You don't want to think about key rotation

The hybrid pattern Short-lived JWT access tokens (5–15 minutes) plus a server-side refresh session. Best of both worlds.
